High levels of radioactive cesium were detected in straw fed to cattle at a farm in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, in the wake of the detection of excessive amounts of radioactive cesium in the meat of cows shipped from there, local officials said Monday.

The straw may have been placed in an unroofed area of the farm when the earthquake and tsunami damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on March 11, they said.

The prefectural government took feed and water samples from the farm Sunday after radioactive cesium was found in the meat of 11 cows shipped to and processed in Tokyo.
