Prime Minister Naoto Kan complained he has been unfairly criticized by opposition parties and the media, but he declined to go into detail to avoid providing ammunition for further attacks.

At a high school reunion in Tokyo on July 23, Kan told more than 400 alumni of Yamaguchi Prefectural Ube High School that he had many years of experience as a member of an opposition party and dealing with the media. He said he often wonders if he had ever been as harsh as the opposition parties are now.

He also said he could not expound further because any touchy statement could imperil his already weakened position.

Citing Japan’s Women’s World Cup victory, Kan said he was also determined to “turn the game around” no matter how many goals he was down.
